Rymdrätt föreskriver att nationellt ianspråkstagande av yttre rymden är förbjudet och att yttre rymden skall vara fri för utforskning och användning. Yttre rymden används av såväl stater som företag och organisationer. Nya användningsområden och användare ställer nya krav. Olika intressen behöver tillgodoses och i boken undersöks dessa, liksom ett rimligt sätt att uppnå en möjlig rättsordning för yttre rymden, som både är till nytta för mänskligheten och överensstämmer med principerna om icke-ianspråkstagande och fritt användande. Space law stipulates that national appropriation of outer space is banned and that outer space shall be free for exploration and use. The use shall be the province of all mankind. With increased intensity and diversification of space use, the question whether different activities in outer space and on celestial bodies are permitted under the rules of freedom of use or whether they amount to banned appropriation is of growing importance. 

Outer space is used by states as well as by companies and organisations. New uses and users put new demands on space law. Different interests need to be accommodated in outer space. These interests are examined as well as the possible way forward to achieve a legal regime for outer space, which is feasible, beneficial to mankind and in accordance with the principles of non-appropriation and freedom of use.
